Joyce L. Wong, O.D.

West Texas Optometry

About Dr. Wong
Joyce L. Wong, O.D. received her Doctor of Optometry from the University of Houston College of Optometry in 1993, and earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology cum laude from the same university.

Dr. Wong’s interest in the eyes started at an early age when she began wearing glasses at the age of eight, and she became curious about why she couldn’t see very well. It was her mother who suggested that she consider a career in optometry. Dr. Wong received a four-year scholarship to the University of Houston where she then joined the Pre Optometry Professional Society as an undergraduate. After four years of volunteer work at the university rotating through various clinics, Dr. Wong’s interest in optometry was strengthened along with her strong desire to help people see more clearly.

When Dr. Wong is not treating patients, she enjoys spending time with her husband, their two daughters, family, and friends. She likes trying out new restaurants, and lists cooking, reading, crocheting, and doing cross-stitch among her hobbies.

Maria Soto, O.D.

About Dr. Soto
Maria Soto, O.D. received her Doctor of Optometry from the University of Houston College of Optometry in 2021, and earned her Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences at Texas A&M University. Her fields of special interest include glaucoma, diabetes, and scleral lenses.

When Dr. Soto was in high school, she knew she wanted to do something to help her twin sister who, as a result of not receiving treatment for amblyopia as a child, now lives with permanent vision loss. In addition, she wanted to pursue a career in the medical field, but desired to have a work-life balance that would allow her to have a family as well. She believes being an optometrist is the perfect fit, and she says she couldn’t have picked a better career.

Dr. Soto loves having the opportunity to educate her patients about their overall eye health and helping them understand how they can prevent vision loss from things like diabetes, glaucoma, or wearing contact lenses.

When she is not in the office treating patients, Dr. Soto is loving her new role as a parent and being a mom to her beautiful baby girl.

Kenneth Falknor, O.D.

About Dr. Falknor
Kenneth Falknor, O.D. received his Doctor of Optometry from the University of Houston College of Optometry, and also earned his Bachelor of Science from the same university. In 1978, he relocated to El Paso to join Envision EyeCare.
In the early 1980’s, Dr. Falknor served as Chief of Optometric Services at McAfee U.S. Army Clinic in White Sands, New Mexico.

Dr. Falknor has been actively involved in community services in El Paso, most notably with the Rotary Club of El Paso. He served as president in 1996-1997 and was Assistant District Governor in 2000-2001. Dr. Falknor is a long-time member of the American Optometric Association and the Texas Optometric Association, and he has served as past president of the El Paso Optometric Society.

In his spare time outside of the office, Dr. Falknor enjoys participating in outdoor activities, including playing golf and camping.

Kathleen Goff, O.D.

About Dr. Goff
Kathleen Goff, O.D. received her Doctor of Optometry from the University of Houston College of Optometry in 1978. A native of El Paso, she returned after graduation to begin practicing optometry alongside her father. Her fields of special interest include general optometry and LASIK co-management.

Dr. Goff is a member of the American Optometric Association, the Texas Optometric Association, and the El Paso Optometric Society. She was the first El Pasoan to be elected President of the Texas Optometric Association in 2000 2001. She has volunteered her optometric services to organizations such as Prevent Blindness, The Lighthouse for the Blind, and the National Children’s Vision Awareness Program.

Dr. Goff has also served on numerous boards, including the Junior League of El Paso, the American Cancer Society, The Lighthouse for the Blind, Soroptimist International, Executive Forum, El Paso Zoological Society, and the Rotary Club of West El Paso.

In her spare time outside of the office, Dr. Goff enjoys spending time with her family, swimming, traveling, camping, and playing golf.

Larry Falknor, O.D.

About Dr. Falknor

Larry Falknor, O.D. received his Doctor of Optometry from the University of Houston College of Optometry and, in 1977, he began practicing optometry in Bay City, Texas. In 1990, Dr. Falknor joined Dr. Kathleen Goff and Dr. Kenneth Falknor at Envision EyeCare in El Paso, Texas.

Dr. Falknor is actively involved in the Rotary Club of El Paso and is one of the first optometrists to attain licensing as an Optometric Glaucoma Specialist in Texas.

When he is not treating patients, Dr. Falknor spends his free time riding his motorcycle, as well as training and playing with his overgrown German shepherd, Schatz. He also enjoys maintaining his home and lawn, and tinkering with gadgets.

Marie Lulette Fermil, O.D.

About Dr. Fermil

Marie Lulette Fermil, O.D. received her Doctor of Optometry from the University of Missouri – St. Louis in 2019 and earned her Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from the University of the Philippines Diliman in 2007.

Dr. Fermil specializes in primary care. In 2009, she enlisted in the U.S. Army as a medic – specifically, an ophthalmic technician. Through this experience, her interest in vision and eye health care grew. Dr. Fermil was inspired to begin her academic journey to become an optometrist after fulfilling her military term. To Dr. Fermil, building strong partnerships with her patients allows her to help improve their eye health and quality of life through better vision.

In her free time, Dr. Fermil enjoys playing with her baby girl, singing karaoke, and watching Korean

Kerry Holt, O.D.

About Dr. Holt

Kerry Holt, O.D. received his Doctor of Optometry from Southern College of Optometry (SCO) in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1998. He earned his undergraduate degree in Biochemistry, with an emphasis in Toxicology, at Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky.

While attending SCO, Dr. Holt was a member of SVOSH (Student Volunteers for the Optometric Service to Humanity) where he traveled abroad to provide eyecare to the residents of Costa Rica. He went on to work for an ophthalmology group in Kentucky, where he was Chief of the Contact Lens Department. Dr. Holt was the first to bring Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT) to El Paso, along with a strong emphasis in sports vision.

As a child, Dr. Holt experienced poor vision growing up. He knew early in his life that he wanted to pursue a career in optometry as a way to help others see better, as well as himself. He particularly enjoys being able to offer solutions to improve the vision of anyone in need.

When he is not treating patients in the office, Dr. Holt enjoys spending his free time watching movies, hiking, and traveling.

Phuong Nguyen, O.D.

About Dr. Nguyen
Phuong Nguyen, O.D. received her Doctor of Optometry from Southern College of Optometry (SCO) in Memphis, Tennessee, and completed her undergraduate studies in Biology at the University of Miami in Miami, Florida.

While attending SCO, Dr. Nguyen was a member of Student Volunteers for the Optometric Service to Humanity (SVOSH) and traveled to Costa Rica where she provided eyecare aid to the local residents.

In practice since 1998, Dr. Nguyen says she chose a career in optometry as a way to help people see better and improve the quality of their everyday lives. She also enjoys the flexibility her profession offers by allowing her to experience a pleasant work-life balance.

When she is not treating patients in the office, Dr. Nguyen enjoys spending time traveling, biking, and being involved in local community groups.

Kathy Phan, O.D.

About Dr. Phan
Kathy Phan, O.D. received her Doctor of Optometry from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and earned her Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Temple University.

Dr. Phan was an independent optometrist in Illinois until she and her husband relocated in 2019 to Ft. Rucker in Alabama for his Army aviation career. With her husband now stationed in Texas at Ft. Bliss, Dr. Phan is excited to provide the residents of El Paso and New Mexico with excellent eye care.

Dr. Phan has always made it her priority to treat each patient as if they were family. She strongly believes that it’s important to take the time to build a strong relationship with her patients so she can best address their individual visual needs.

When she is not treating patients, Dr. Phan loves spending time with her husband and their dog. She also enjoys cooking, working out, and hiking in the Franklin Mountains.

Andy Do, O.D.

About Dr. Do
Andy Do, O.D. received his Doctor of Optometry from the Illinois College of Optometry in 2020, and earned his undergraduate degree in Human Development and Family Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin.

While attending the Illinois College of Optometry, he chartered the school’s first student-led mental health group in addition to holding executive positions for the Student Association, Orientation Team, and the Private Practice Club. He was awarded the Tsang Family Scholarship and the Cribb Leadership and Service Award for his involvement in the community.

In 2021, Dr. Do successfully completed residency training at the Amarillo Veteran Affairs Hospital in Amarillo, Texas, where he gained special interest in diseases of the retina, including diabetes, macular degeneration, and vein occlusions.

A native of El Paso, Dr. Do is thrilled to return to his hometown after being away for more than a decade, and is eager and committed to providing excellent care to all of his patients.

Hannah Kim, O.D.

About Dr. Kim

Hannah Kim, O.D. received her Doctor of Optometry at Pacific University’s College of Optometry (PUCO) in Forest Grove, Oregon, and she completed her undergraduate studies at Portland State University in Portland, Oregon.

Dr. Kim was a member of AMIGOS Eye Care, an organization affiliated with PUCO that is founded on a commitment to eyecare missions to underserved locations in the United States and throughout the world. Dr. Kim was committed to her local chapter, which included a trip to provide eyecare to the underprivileged in Costa Rica. She was also a member of Beta Sigma Kappa.

Dr. Kim has been practicing optometry since 2014 and providing primary eyecare ranging from managing vision abnormalities to surgical co-management, as well as the diagnosis and management of various diseases. She especially enjoys providing quality eyecare to patients from the greater El Paso/Borderplex region.

In her time away from the office, Dr. Kim enjoys traveling, camping, and enjoying the great outdoors with her husband and children.

Destiny Mbidoaka, O.D.

About Dr. Mbidoaka

Destiny Mbidoaka, O.D. received his Doctor of Optometry from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in 2021 and earned his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from the University of Houston in 2015.

Along with a growing fascination with the eyes, Dr. Mbidoaka was also inspired by the kindness of his optometrist to pursue a career in ocular health. He loves getting to know his patients and the inexplainable feeling of joy watching his patients be happy after helping them achieve their vision goals.

In his free time, Dr. Mbidoaka enjoys maintaining his physical fitness routines, streaming his favorite shows and movies, reading, traveling, doing outdoor activities, and learning new things.

Dipak Patel, O.D.

About Dr. Patel
Dipak Patel, O.D. received his Doctor of Optometry from the Southern College of Optometry in 2000, and earned his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the University of Houston. He graduated with several honors and awards, and is a member of various optometric and pharmaceutical organizations.

Dr. Patel is a Therapeutic Optometrist and an Optometric Glaucoma Specialist with diversified work experience, including low vision, pediatrics, geriatrics, vision therapy, and contact lenses.

After practicing pharmacy for several years, Dr. Patel realized he wanted to be more involved with patient care. He then took advantage of an opportunity to attend optometry school, which opened doors to a career in optometry allowing him to work with patients and also become an entrepreneur. Dr. Patel enjoys the feeling of helping his patients see and experience their world in the best way possible through better vision.

When he is not treating patients, Dr. Patel likes to travel and to experience new things. In his free time at home, he can often be found spending time with his family enjoying movies, running outdoors, and reading.

Dorothy M. Preston, O.D.

Dorothy Preston, O.D. received her Doctor of Optometry from Indiana University’s School of Optometry in 1987, and completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. She is a member of the American Optometric Association and the Texas Optometric Association.

Dr. Preston is passionate about her work and the care she provides to her patients. She values her opportunity to play an important role in her patients’ lives by improving their vision from youth through adulthood.

Away from the office, Dr. Preston has served on numerous boards in the community and is active in the Abilene Philharmonic Association and the Community Foundation Future Fund. In her spare time, she and her husband enjoy spending time with their family, as well as volunteering, traveling and playing golf.

Steven C. Ezzell, O.D.

About Dr. Ezzell
Steven Ezzell, O.D. received his Doctor of Optometry from the University of Houston College of Optometry in 1998, and completed his undergraduate studies in Biology at Texas A&M University. A native of Abilene, he also attended Abilene Christian University for two years where he played baseball for the Wildcats. Dr. Ezzell is a member of the American Optometric Association, the American Academy of Optometry, and the Texas Optometric Association.

Dr. Ezzell had the unique experience of being a patient at this same practice when he was growing up, and he was influenced by his own eye doctors to choose a career in optometry. He enjoys the diversity of practicing family eye care and especially enjoys seeing the excitement of his patients when they are able to see better than they ever thought possible.

In his free time away from the office, Dr. Ezzell loves spending time with his family and is active in his church. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the West Texas Rehabilitation Center and enjoys outdoor activities, such as hunting and fishing.
